On June 29, 2009, President Obama issued Proclamation 8394 in order to amend the tariff schedule to modify duty-free treatment and certain designations under the Generalized System of Preferences, and for other purposes.

The House of Representatives has passed a bill to authorize the President to proclaim duty-free treatment for certain products (including textiles and apparel) from designated Reconstruction Opportunity Zones (ROZs) within Afghanistan or specified areas in Pakistan, through September 30, 2024.
The Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) program (i.e., A, A*, and A) for most beneficiary countries, i.e., other than those listed as African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) beneficiary countries, will expire on December 31, 2009, unless a law extending it is enacted.
