Harmonized Tariff Schedule

The Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) provide classification provisions and duty rates for almost every item that exists. It is a system of classifying and taxing all goods imported into the United States. The HTS is based on the international Harmonized System, which is a global standard for naming and describing trade products, and consists of a hierarchical structure that assigns a specific code and rate to each type of merchandise for duty, quota, and statistical purposes. The HTS was made effective on January 1, 1989, replacing the former Tariff Schedules of the United States. It is maintained by the U.S. International Trade Commission, but CBP is responsible for interpreting and enforcing the HTS.

CBP Corrects Guidance on Chapter 99 HTS Number for Steel Derivatives

CBP has updated its June 20 guidance on Section 232 additional steel derivative products (see 2506200066) to list the correct number for preexisting Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the U.S. subheading 9903.81.98, according to a June 24 cargo systems message. The change corrects the Chapter 99 HTS number for some steel or iron derivative imports coming from the U.K. No changes were made to the attachment that was part of the CSMS message, according to CBP.

CBP Refunds 2.5% Duties Paid on Rare Cars, Classifying Them as Collector's Pieces

An individual importer, Ricardo Vega, will receive refunds for a Porsche imported in 2023, according to a stipulated judgment filed at the Court of International Trade on June 17. Similarly, importers Yellowbird Enterprises and Vantage Point Services will receive refunds for duties paid on a Jaguar also entered in 2023.
