NEW ORLEANS -- Submitting prior disclosures to CBP has recently been more “fraught,” and customs brokers need to consider all available options before advising their clients to move forward with the process, Heather Litman, a customs lawyer with Grunfeld Desiderio, said at the National Customs Brokers & Forwarders Association of America annual conference April 25.
FDA has issued its Enforcement Report for April 19, listing the status of recalls and field corrections for food, cosmetics, tobacco products, drugs, biologics and devices. The report covers both domestic and foreign firms.
Though only required for customs brokers that apply for a national license after CBP’s broker modernization final rule took effect this past December, CBP sees customs broker supervision plans as a “best practice for all brokers, and we would encourage all brokers to have a supervision plan in place,” said Shari McCann, director of CBP’s commercial operations, revenue and entry branch, on April 18.

CBP, Trade Need Consensus to Get Through Short Window for 21CCF Customs Legislation, Ex-Staffer Says
With a short window for passing customs modernization legislation this year and uncertain prospects after that, it’s important that CBP and the trade community “stick the landing” of the 21st Century Customs Framework initiative and present a united front to Congress when a legislative proposal is submitted by CBP later this year, said John Drake, vice president-supply chain policy at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Despite the success of its Section 321 data pilot, which has taught CBP lessons on the types of data on de minimis shipments it may find helpful and reduced hiccups for industry participants providing the additional data, CBP still has “quite a bit we can learn,” CBP’s Christopher Mabelitini said during a webinar April 12. In addition to expanding the number of participants covered by the pilot, CBP is looking to increase the universe of data and transactions.
