Trump Threatens Tariffs on Countries that Export Furniture
Days after President Donald Trump said 30% tariffs on upholstered furniture were starting Oct. 1, he wrote on social media, "In order to make North Carolina, which has completely lost its furniture business to China, and other Countries, GREAT again, I will be imposing substantial Tariffs on any Country that does not make its furniture in the United States. According to International Trade Commission data, from August 2024 to July 2025, for wooden furniture across subheadings 9401.41, 9401.49, 9140.61, 9401.91, 9403.30, 9403.40, 9403.50, 9403.60, 9403.91 and bedframes in 94014.10, which could be any material:
- China exported $2.4 billion worth
- Vietnam exported $2.1 billion worth
- Italy exported $316 million worth
- Malaysia exported almost $220 million worth
- Indonesia exported $148 million worth.
Only upholstered furniture, not wooden tables, bedstands, dressers, bedframes or plain wooden chairs was mentioned in Trump's post last week; however, the Section 232 investigation on timber and lumber said wooden furniture could fall in scope of the trade action.
