Hawley Proposes $600/Person Tariff Rebate Checks
Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., one of the leading populist voices in the Senate, introduced a bill this week that would send checks of at least $600 to most adults who file tax returns, as a rebate for tariff costs.

The amount of the check would be reduced for those who earn more than $75,000 (or couples with more than $150,000 in income), and only U.S. citizens and green-card holders would be eligible. Children, as deductions for a taxpayer, also would be eligible for the $600 rebates.
In a press release, Hawley said he introduced the bill after the president endorsed the idea. The president, when talking to reporters, said the tariff revenue should primarily be used to pay down the debt, but that they were talking about "a little rebate."
Hawley's bill would provide for larger rebates than $600/person, saying that the size of the check would be either $600, or the amount of all tariff proceeds, divided by all eligible individuals and qualifying children, whichever is larger.
"My legislation would allow hard-working Americans to benefit from the wealth that Trump’s tariffs are returning to this country," Hawley said in the release.
The rebates would end at the end of 2026.
