Trump Says Canada and US Will End Up With Very Good Relationship

President Donald Trump described his phone call with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney as "extremely productive," in a social media post, adding "we agree on many things, and will be meeting immediately after Canada’s upcoming Election to work on elements of Politics, Business, and all other factors, that will end up being great for both the United States of America and Canada. Thank you for your attention to this matter!"

The Canadian readout of the call called it very constructive, and said that, before the national election at the end of April, talks between Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Canadian trade minister Dominic LeBlanc "will intensify to address immediate concerns."

"The Prime Minister informed the President that his government will implement retaliatory tariffs to protect Canadian workers and our economy, following the announcement of additional U.S. trade actions on April 2, 2025," the readout concluded.

With reporters later in the day, Trump said, "We had a very, very good talk." He referred to Liberation Day -- Trump's name for April 2, when higher tariffs are coming on trading partners -- while specifically saying he wasn't including Canada in his indictment of "many nations" who have taken advantage of the U.S. in trade.

"We're going to end up with a very good relationship with Canada, and a lot of the other countries, some we probably won't," he said.

In response to a question from an Indian reporter, he said, "You have a great prime minister. And we had very good talks. I think it's going to work out very well between India and our country."
