Democratic Senators Seek ITC Study on Economic Effects of IEEPA Tariffs on Canada, Mexico
Sen. Angela Alsobrooks, D-Md., introduced a bill that would direct the International Trade Commission to do an investigation on the effects of the 25% and 10% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, including on consumer prices, and the impact on small businesses and farmers, including due to retaliation from those countries, within a year of enactment. The bill lays out the sectors to be covered, and also asks the ITC economists to estimate the impact on domestic jobs and investment.

This is Alsobrooks' first bill. She was joined by the top Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, and 15 other Democrats.
“Marylanders are struggling to put food on the table and afford the basic necessities as it is. The last thing we need are tariffs that will raise prices,” Alsobrooks said in a press release announcing the bill.
The release also quoted Minority Business Economic Council President Herman Taylor, who said, "President [Donald] Trump has said his tariffs will only cause ‘a little disturbance.’ This bill will force him to prove it."
