Seasonality Bill Reintroduced by Florida Delegation Members

Florida's two Republican senators, Rick Scott and Marco Rubio, along with Rep. Al Lawson, D-Fla., and the top Republican on the House Trade subcommittee, Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., reintroduced a bill that would change antidumping law to allow fruit and vegetable growers to bring cases when the injury is for only part of the growing season, and would not require the majority of growers to initiate a case.

Southeastern members of Congress had hoped to get Mexico to agree to this change as part of the NAFTA rewrite, and have not been successful getting a vote for the bill in 2018 or during the previous Congress.

“We must ensure the viability of Florida’s fruit and vegetable growers, who for years have struggled to compete with dumped and unfairly priced Mexican imports," Rubio said in a June 16 news release. "I firmly believe that food security is national security, and that to ensure our nation’s food security we must defend our food producers from malicious trade practices that are intended to undermine our self-reliance.”
