Wyden Wants to Pass MTB 'as Soon as Possible'

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden, D-Ore., said through a spokesperson that he will continue working with House and Senate colleagues “to reauthorize GSP and pass the new MTB bill as soon as possible.” The bills must originate in the House, since they are revenue bills.

He was responding to an International Trade Today question about whether it was accurate that Finance Committee members don't see the Generalized System of Preferences benefits program and the Miscellaneous Tariff Bill as urgent, since importers will be eligible for refunds for tariffs paid while the programs were expired (see 2103310023). In the statement, he said that he recognizes the importance of the programs to American companies, including manufacturers.

Committee member Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, during a press call April 7, said he wants to “go ahead and get it settled.” He said he doesn't want GSP to be tied up with other issues.
