The Census Bureau and U.S. Commercial Service-South Florida are holding two Automated Export System compliance seminars in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. March 5-8. A Spanish-language seminar March 5-6 (here) will be followed by an English-language version March 7-8 (here). On the first day of each seminar, Census officials will cover the filing requirements of the Foreign Trade Regulations, commodity classification in Schedule B, and AES. On the second day, an AESPcLink Workshop will be offered. Both seminars will be held at NOVA Southeastern University.

The Agricultural Marketing Service released the Ocean Shipping Container Availability Report (OSCAR) for the week of Feb. 13-19. The weekly report contains data on container availability for westbound transpacific traffic at 18 intermodal locations in the U.S.1 from the eight member carriers of the Westbound Transpacific Stabilization Agreement (WTSA).2 Although the report is compiled by AMS, it covers container availability for all merchandise, not just agricultural products.
The Florida Department of Transportation implemented rule changes easing permitting and weight requirements for trucks to bring its standards into line with neighboring states and increase the state’s competitiveness. “By streamlining operations we’ll better position Florida to capitalize on the increased trade opportunities that the expansion of the Panama Canal will bring to our communities,” said Florida Governor Rick Scott. “By implementing these rule changes, we are not only enabling freight to flow better but ensuring that Florida remains competitive,” added Ananth Prasad, secretary of FDOT.

The Food and Drug Administration issued its weekly Enforcement Report for Feb. 13 that lists the status of recalls and field corrections for food, drugs, biologics, and devices. The report covers both domestic and foreign firms.
The Food and Drug Administration is extending until May 16 the period for submission of comments related to information collection provisions of its proposed rules on produce safety and preventative controls. The two proposed food safety rules, “Current Good Manufacturing Practice and Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventative Controls for Human Food,” and “Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing, and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption,” published Jan. 16, apply to both foreign and domestic producers. The 90-day extension of the period for comments on proposed information collection requirements means the deadline for all comments, whether related to provisions of the proposed rules or the information collections, falls on the same date.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the problem.
