Trade Subcommittee Chair Says Working Group Details TBA

Several House Republicans changed their votes so that a move to block votes on emergency tariffs could succeed after being promised a Republican tariff working group (see 2509170048).

The man who will lead that group, House Ways and Means Trade Subcommittee Chairman Adrian Smith of Nebraska, told International Trade Today that the membership of that group, and when they will begin meeting, has not yet been worked out.

"My desire is to hear out various members," he said in a hallway interview at the Capitol. "These are important topics, and it's important to note that I think a lot has been accomplished with trade being a priority of this administration, and seeing other countries moving in a positive direction."

He said President Donald Trump's trade policy -- which has been mostly based on the emergency tariffs at issue -- has resulted in other countries lowering their tariffs or non-tariff barriers to our exports. "Other countries know that we're serious about this. That's good."
