Vietnam Asking for Reconsideration of Coming Fish Import Ban

The Vietnamese government said it sent a letter to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, asking Commerce and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration "to reconsider their decision to refuse to recognize the equivalent of 12 Vietnamese seafood fishing occupations in order to avoid serious disruptions to bilateral trade and protect the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese fishermen and workers."

That decision, if NOAA does not reverse it in coming months, will result in a ban on imports of Vietnamese snappers, mullets, soles, mackerel, tuna, marlins, swordfish and other species, starting Jan. 1.

All the Harmonized Tariff Schedule codes, for all countries, facing the ban are listed here. The bans are because these countries haven't documented that they do enough to stop mammals from getting caught in their fishing nets when fishermen are harvesting these species.

The agency also (see 2509020014) intends to ban all wild-caught products from The Gambia, Grenada, Guinea, Namibia, New Caledonia, Russia, Saint Lucia, and Togo over this issue.
