Trump Says Chips Tariffs Will Be Only for Companies Not Producing in US
President Donald Trump, before a dinner with tech company CEOs Sept. 4, took a few questions from reporters, including one on planned tariffs on semiconductors and, possibly, goods made with chips.

"We’ll be putting a tariff very shortly. You probably are hearing we’ll be putting a fairly substantial tariff, or not that high, but fairly substantial tariff," he said, offering no details on rates or scope.
However, he did say that for companies that either build chips or affected products in the U.S., or plan to come to the U.S. to manufacture, "there will not be a tariff. If they're not coming in, there's a tariff."
He added: "I would say, [Apple's] Tim Cook would be in pretty good shape."
