FDA Amending Food Additive Regs to Allow Vitamin D3 as Nutrient Supplement in Yogurt

The FDA is amending its food additive regulations to allow for the safe use of vitamin D3 as a nutrient supplement in yogurt and other cultured dairy products fermented with Lactobacillus delbrueckii, subspecies bulgaricus (L. delbrueckik), subsp. bulgaricus), and Streptococcus thermophilus (S. thermophilus) at a level higher than is currently permitted, it said in a Federal Register notice.

The FDA also is updating the reference for the vitamin D3 specifications.

The changes are effective Sept. 4. Any objections must be received by 11:59 p.m. ET on Oct. 6.

The FDA made this change in response to a food additive petition filed by General Mills.
