FDA Places 4 Companies on Import Alert for Improper Short Weighting of Seafood
Over one-third of retail-packaged frozen seafood products sampled by the FDA for short weighting failed to be compliant with net weight declaration on the product label, and those importers found violating compliance have been placed on an import alert, according to results from the agency released on Sept. 2.

The FDA's sampling occurred from 2022 to 2024 and involved the collection of 28 samples of retail-packaged frozen seafood products imported from four countries. Out of the 28 samples, 10 samples, or 36%, were found to be violative with 2.3% to 9.9% short weight, the FDA said. All shipments of violative samples were refused entry into the U.S., the FDA continued, with the associated firms and their violative products being placed on Import Alert 99-47.
The companies placed on the import alert include China's Zhoushan City Shengtai Aquatic Co. for squid, India's Asvini Fisheries for shrimp, Indonesia's PT Bumi Pangan Utama for shrimp and Indonesia's First Marine Seafoods for shrimp.
