Trump: Decision on Tariffs for Russian Energy Purchases to Come Aug. 6

President Donald Trump denied having said he would impose Russia-related secondary tariffs of 100%, but said a decision on what tariffs would be imposed for countries buying Russian energy would be decided on Aug. 6.

Trump mentioned the 100% number during a July 14 press conference (see 2507140015). In response to a question from a reporter at the White House Aug. 5 on whether he still intended to go through with that threat, he said: "Well, I never said a percentage, but I said I'll be doing quite a bit of that. We'll see what happens over the next fairly short period of time." He said that after administration representatives meet with Russian government officials on Aug. 6, "we'll make that determination at that time."
