Lawmaker Reintroduces Bill to End Export Control 'Loophole' for Chips

Rep. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., reintroduced a bill April 7 that aims to close a loophole that has allowed China to use cloud service providers to access advanced U.S. computing chips remotely.

Although the U.S. has blocked the physical export of sensitive chips to China, Chinese companies are using cloud computing to circumvent the restrictions and access the chips, Lawler said.

The Remote Access Security Act is co-sponsored by Reps. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, Rich McCormick, R-Ga., Brad Sherman, D-Calif., and John Moolenaar, R-Mich. Moolenaar chairs the House Select Committee on China.

The House Foreign Affairs Committee plans to take up the bill April 9. The House passed the legislation in the last Congress (see 2405060048 and 2409100024).
