Lawmakers Praise New Sanctions on Hong Kong Officials
Several lawmakers welcomed the State Department’s March 31 announcement that it is sanctioning six Hong Kong government and police officials who it said have helped to implement the territory's repressive national security law (see 2503310041).

Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J., who chairs the Congressional-Executive Commission on China, said the sanctioned officials are “complicit in undermining the city’s freedoms and responsible for transnational repression targeting American citizens and Hong Kongers residing in the U.S.”
The House Select Committee on China’s Republican majority tweeted that it “has been calling for accountability on these individuals since December 2023, and we’re pleased to see the @StateDept taking action to hold them responsible for their transnational repression.” Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Jim Risch, R-Idaho, described the sanctions as “long-overdue.”
