President Donald Trump posted on social media on March 3, "To the Great Farmers of the United States: Get ready to start making a lot of agricultural product to be sold INSIDE of the United States. Tariffs will go on external product on April 2nd. Have fun!"

Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., in a speech on the floor of the Senate, criticized the post.
"Have fun? Have fun? When retaliatory tariffs strike our farmers, just as they did in the first Trump administration, it's not going to be fun, it's going to be a nightmare for our farmers. And many of the farmers in my state worry that they will be able to farm at all," she said.
