DOE Delays Final Rule on Energy Efficiency Standards for Walk-in Coolers, Freezers

The Department of Energy is delaying the effective date of a final rule that adopted amended conservation standards for walk-in coolers and freezers, it said in a Federal Register notice. DOE also is seeking comment on the delay, including impacts that may result, as well as any comment on any legal, factual or policy issues related to the rule, the notice said.

The effective date is now March 21, with comments accepted through March 13. The final rule was to have become effective Feb. 21.

The final rule, published in December (see 2412200039), increases minimum required efficiency standards for non-display doors for walk-in freezers and coolers, as well as for refrigeration systems for walk-in freezers and coolers. DOE isn't amending its standards for display doors or panels. Compliance with the changes for non-display doors would start on Dec. 23, 2027, and with changes for refrigeration systems starting Dec. 31, 2028.
