US, UK Issue Coordinated Iran Designations
The U.S. and the U.K. on Dec. 14 announced a coordinated set of sanctions targeting senior Iranian military officials, including those supporting the “terrorist activities” of Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

The Office of Foreign Assets Control sanctioned Majid Zaree, an official with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force, for helping the IRGC-QF support Hezbollah, Hamas and other groups. The U.K.’s Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation sanctioned seven people and one entity, including Zaree, the IRGC-QF’s Palestinian branch, members of that branch and others with ties to Hamas.
OFAC noted that the U.K. designations marked the country’s first sanctions under its new Iran-related authorities, which are separate from its Iran (Human Rights) regime. The U.K.’s new Iran sanctions regime will allow it to designate people and companies with ties to Iranian efforts to “undermine peace and security across the Middle East and plots to kill individuals on U.K. soil,” OFAC said.
As part of the new sanctions, the U.K. transferred 173 entities from its Iran (Human Rights) regime to its broader Iran sanctions regime. All entries were updated with a “corresponding UK Sanctions List reference number” and a reference to the new sanctions regime.
