Commerce Interviews Chinese Tech Expert to Head BIS, Report Says

Newly confirmed Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo interviewed Chinese technology expert James Mulvenon to head the Bureau of Industry and Security, Reuters reported March 30. It’s unclear whether the interview will lead to a “vetting” for the undersecretary post, the report said, or how many others will be interviewed. A BIS spokesperson declined to comment.

Mulvenon, who works for the aerospace company SOS International, has been a vocal advocate for export restrictions against China (see 2102120034). Kevin Wolf, an export controls lawyer and a former BIS official, is also rumored to be considered for the role but has said he doesn't know if he will be nominated (see 2102260021).
