- Canada strengthens its arms controls. Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland issued a statement Dec. 13 on the granting of Royal Assent to Bill C-47, an act to amend the Export and Import Permits Act and the Criminal Code: “Today, Canada takes an important step forward to strengthen our existing arms export system, bringing us closer to accession to the Arms Trade Treaty. We are unwavering in our commitment to a stronger and more rigorous approach to the export of Canadian arms. These changes will set a permanent and higher standard that meets Canada’s commitment to human rights around the world.” The new standards and criteria of the Arms Trade Treaty will now be written directly into Canadian law.
- Product Recalls: Dormakaba USA Inc. recalls Stanley Commercial Hardware locksets manufactured in Taiwan, for entrapment hazard related to failure to open in emergency; Nettoyants Lemieux recalls concentrated dishwasher powder manufactured in Canada, for improper chemical labeling that could result in injury; TJX Canada recalls various Casa Décor Brand glass knobs manufactured in India, for laceration hazard; Dell Inc. recalls Hybrid Adapters sold in combination with a power bank manufactured in China, for electric shock hazard.
