CBP Expands Pilot for Commercial Truck User Fee Automation to All Land Border Crossings

CBP expanded its test of automation and prepayment of commercial truck single-crossing fees as part of an effort to eliminate cash and credit card collections, the agency said in a news release (here). Previously only at the Buffalo, Detroit and El Paso ports (see 1605020013), the program will now be available at all commercial land border crossings, it said. “Providing the trucking industry with an online payment option will ultimately decrease wait times and allow CBP officers to focus more closely on enforcement issues,” said Executive Assistant Commissioner, Office of Field Operations Todd Owen.

Under the pilot, carriers or their agents can make single-crossing user fee online payments through the Decal and Transponder Online Procurement System by computer or eventually a smartphone app to pay the required single-crossing user fee before arriving at the U.S. port of entry, it said. When the truck arrives at primary processing, a CBP officer can check ACE to see if the user fee was prepaid. "The online payment option has been used more than 4,400 times since the pilot began, reducing transaction time by an estimated 30 seconds per transaction," the agency said.
