Tiberi Named Ways and Means Trade Subcommittee Chair

Rep. Pat Tiberi, R-Ohio, will take the reins of the House Ways and Means Trade Subcommittee in the next Congress, incoming committee chairman Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., announced on Dec. 4 (here). Current trade subcommittee Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., is leaving his post as subcommittee head after Speaker of the House John Boehner tapped him to lead the House Select Committee on Intelligence in November.

Tiberi has served on the Ways and Means Committee since 2007, but does not man the trade subcommittee in the current Congress. "It’s an exciting time to be working on our country’s trade policy because there is plenty of room for common ground,” said Tiberi in a statement (here). “Republicans and Democrats in the House and Senate, as well as the president, can agree that free trade agreements create more markets to sell American goods and services. Increasing exports will grow our businesses and create more American jobs.” Tiberi's office did not respond for further comment.

The House Republican Steering Committee recommended Ryan take over Ways and Means in mid-November (see 1411190014). His office declined to comment on Dec. 3, a day before Ryan made the subcommittee selections, on whether Ways and Means chief Republican trade counsel Angela Ellard will keep her position. Rep. Charles Boustany took a stab at the trade subcommittee chairmanship over recent months, but ultimately Ryan awarded him the Human Resources chief position (see 14100102). Boustany will remain on the trade subcommittee.
