FWS states that hunters considering trips to Iran and Sudan have contacted the agency concerning prohibitions on imports of sport-hunted trophies from these countries in connection with official sanctions imposed by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).
Iran. OFAC has informed the FWS that sport-hunted trophies may be imported from Iran only if the items are in accompanying personal baggage. Sport-hunted trophies shipped separately are prohibited and subject to referral by FWS officers to Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers for possible enforcement action.
Sudan. For Sudan, sport-hunted trophies are prohibited regardless of shipping method.
The FWS states that hunters traveling to these countries should be aware of the above restrictions and contact OFAC if they have any further questions.
(Note that FWS does not mention the status of the new country, Republic of South Sudan, which seceded from Republic of Sudan in July 2011 and is not subject to many restrictions. See ITT's Online Archives 11071124 for notice on U.S.' formal recognition of South Sudan.)
