Republicans Vow to Block Legislation in Senate Until Govt Funding, Tax Cut Bills Passed

On November 29, 2010, the Senate Republican Caucus sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Reid (D) informing him that they will not agree to invoke cloture1 on the motion to proceed to any legislative item until the Senate has acted to fund the government and has extended the tax cuts that expire at the end of 2010. According to the letter, with little time left in the Congressional session, legislative scheduling should be focused on those priorities.

The Senators note that while there are other items that might ultimately be worthy of the Senate’s attention, they cannot agree to prioritize any matters above the issues of funding the government and extending the expiring tax cuts.

1The only procedure by which the Senate can vote to place a time limit on consideration of a bill or other matter, and thereby overcome a filibuster. Under the cloture rule, the Senate may limit consideration of a pending matter to 30 additional hours, but only by vote of three-fifths of the full Senate, normally 60 votes.
