Senate Finance Chair Criticizes Taiwan's Failure to Implement Beef Protocol

Senate Finance Chairman Baucus (D) sent a letter to the Government of Taiwan expressing disappointment with Taiwan's failure to implement the beef import protocol signed by the U.S. and Taiwan on October 22, 2009. Senator Baucus expressed concern about reports that the Legislative Yuan plans to pass an amendment to Taiwan's Food Sanitation Act that would bar certain U.S. beef products and would abrogate the import protocol. Senator Baucus further stated that he expects Taiwan to implement the October 22, 2009 import protocol in full. Baucus letter available by emailing documents@brokerpower.com.

Senate Bill Would Add Bighead Carp to the List of Injurious Fish

On December 10, 2009, the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee ordered favorably reported S. 1421, a bill that would add bighead carp to the list of injurious species that are prohibited from being shipped or imported into the U.S. (except under certain permits, conditions). (The Fish and Wildlife Service has already listed other species of Asian carp, such as black carp and silver carp, as injurious under the Lacey Act.)
