Executive Order Expands Burma Sanctions

President Bush has issued Executive Order (EO) 13464, effective May 1, 2008 at 12:01 a.m. eastern daylight time, expanding the Burma (Myanmar) sanctions by blocking the property or interests in property of additional "persons" (i.e. individuals or entities).

State-Owned Entities, Etc. Now Blocked under Burma Sanctions

EO 13464 expands the Burma sanctions by blocking the property or interests in property of any "person" determined by the Secretary of the Treasury, after consultation with the Secretary of State, to be owned or controlled by, directly or indirectly, the Government of Burma or an official or officials of the Government of Burma (e.g. state-owned enterprises, their branches, etc).

Under the EO, all property and interests in property of such "persons" that are in the U.S. or that are or hereafter come within the possession or control of U.S. persons, including their overseas branches, are blocked and may not be transferred, paid, exported, withdrawn, or otherwise dealt in.

Three New Entities with Burma Addresses Blocked

This EO also blocks the property and interests in property of :

Myanmar Gem Enterprise (aka Myanma Gem Enterprise; MGE); Yangon, Burma

Myanmar Timber Enterprise (aka Myanma Timber Enterprise; MTE); Yangon, Burma

Myanmar Pearl Enterprise (aka Myanma Pearl Enterprise; MPE); Naypyitaw, Burma
