WCO Posts Its 2008 Training Calendar For the Private Sector
The World Customs Organization has posted its 2008 training calendar for the private sector to its Web site. The WCO will be offering the following training opportunities for importers, exporters, manufacturers, customs brokers, and other specified participants at its headquarters in Brussels, Belgium:

Harmonized System: General Interpretative Rules. February 12-13, 2008. The class covers the core fundamentals of the Harmonized System and is intended to enhance classification abilities and help attendees understand the basic rules for classifying goods and legally justifying classification opinions.
The class is intended for importers, exporters, manufacturers, customs brokers, clearing agents, consultants, and legal advisers with a basic understanding of classification issues. It consists of 3 hours of e-learning material and 2 days of on-site training and costs 1,750 for the 1st participant and 1,550 for each extra participant. WCO Customs Data Model. March 18-19, 2008. The class is intended to help participants gain a greater understanding of the WCO Customs Data Model and its strategic role in managing global trade efficiently as well as the application of information and communication technology within the customs environment.
The class is targeted to multinational companies that regularly conduct global trading operations and therefore deal with various formal customs requirements around the world. Participants should have a good understanding of the mechanics of international trade coupled with a basic understanding of data structure, EDI and EDIFACT messaging. The class consists of 3 hours of e-learning material and 2 days of on-site training and costs 1,750 for the 1st participant and 1,550 for each extra participant. Rules of Origin: Rules applicable to EU trade relations. April 8-9, 2008. The class will discuss the preferential and non-preferential rules of origin applicable to European Union (EU) trade relations, including the rules applicable to trade relations between the EU and third countries, in particular Pan European Mediterranean rules of origin and selected NAFTA and Asian rules of origin.

Harmonized System for Transport Equipment. April 15-16, 2008. The class is intended to help familiarize participants with the provisions for transport equipment in the HS, gain in-depth knowledge on classification of goods in HS Chapters 84 and 87, focusing on vehicles for the transport of persons and those for the transport of goods, mobile machines, and their related parts and accessories.

Customs Valuation and Transfer Pricing. May 14-15, 2008. The class is intended to increase understanding of customs valuation and transfer pricing and of the rules to adjust the Customs value to avoid potential problems arising at a later stage.

WCO SAFE Framework of Standards, May 28-29, 2008. The course is meant to gain a clearer understanding of the WCO Framework of Standards to Secure and Facilitate Global Trade (SAFE Framework), explore ways in which trade operators can constructively cooperate with Customs administrations to implement the SAFE Framework in a global trade strategy, get acquainted with the concept of the Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) and understand the objectives and benefits of the SAFE Framework and AEO status.
The intended participants are importers-exporters; international, regional and national associations of trade operators; the transport and logistic sector; right holders; management and legal advisers; and anyone interested in customs activities aimed at securing and facilitating the global trade. Harmonized System for Chemical Products. June 3-4, 2008. This class is to fully understand the basic rules for classifying chemical products and to explore the areas of chemical products for which classification is not obvious at first sight.
This course is designed for importers, exporters, manufacturers; employees from the chemical, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries; any industry professionals dealing with the importation and/or exportation of chemical products and products of allied industries; customs brokers, clearing agents, consultants, and legal advisers. A basic understanding of classification issues and a basic level of chemical knowledge is essential. The class consists of 6 hours of e-learning material, 2 days of on-site training, and costs 1,850 for the 1st participant and 1,650 for each extra participant. Combating Counterfeiting and Piracy. June 10-12, 2008. This class is intended to explore ways in which rights holders can constructively cooperate with Customs administrations in the fight to combat the trade in counterfeit and pirated goods and to gain a clearer understanding of the complex legislation, methods, and risk analysis techniques used by Customs to protect intellectual property rights.
The participant profile for the class includes rights holders, international, regional and national associations of rights holders, the transport sector, importers, exporters, the legal fraternity, IPR advisers, and anyone interested in customs activities aimed at protecting intellectual property rights.
