According to Washington Trade Daily, on September 20, 2005, the Senate approved an amendment to the fiscal 2006 agriculture appropriations bill (HR 2744) that would bar the Agriculture Department from developing a final rule to amend its regulations to allow certain Japanese beef to be imported. (On August 18, 2005, USDA issued a proposed rule to allow certain whole cuts of boneless beef to be imported from Japan. 2. Canada Initiates AD/CV Investigation on U.S. Grain Corn
The Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) has issued a notice announcing the initiation of an investigation into the alleged injurious dumping and subsidizing of grain corn in all forms, excluding seed corn (for reproductive purposes), sweet corn, and popping corn, from the U.S. The Secretary of Agriculture and the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) have issued a joint statement expressing disappointment at Canada's decision to initiate an antidumping/countervailing (AD/CV) investigation and noting that the U.S. government will be actively engaged with the Canadian investigative agencies during the investigation to defend the interests of U.S. corn producers and exporters. 3. Census Proposes to Expand Trade Survey to Include Brokers, Agents, Etc.
The Bureau of Census (Census) has issued a notice announcing that it is proposing to expand the 2005 Annual Trade Survey (ATS) to include agents, brokers, and electronic markets at the request of the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA). The BEA considers this information vital to its accurate measurement of sales and value added for wholesale trade. Written comments must be submitted on or before October 20, 2005. 4. State Department's Advisory Committee on Int'l Law to Hold Public Meeting
The State Department has issued a pubic notice announcing that the Advisory Committee on International Law will hold a public meeting on September 29, 2005 in Washington, DC in order to discuss various issues relating to current international legal topics.
