On April 28, 2005 the Senate confirmed Robert J. Portman as U.S. Trade Representative (USTR). According to a USTR press release, Portman states that Congressional approval of the Central American and Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement, China trade issues, the enforcement of existing agreements, keeping on pace the Doha talks to lower trade barriers, and ongoing regional and bilateral trade negotiations are all front and center issues for him. 2. WTO Urges Caution in Imposing China Textile Safeguard Limits

According to The Wall Street Journal, the head of the World Trade Organization (WTO) has stated that it would be a mistake for countries struggling with a surge in Chinese textile exports to throw up protectionist walls right away. According to the WTO head, governments should wait at least a year before taking protection steps. (WSJ, dated 04/25/05, www.wsj.com)

3. TSA to Test New Access Control Technologies at Five Airports

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has issued a press release announcing that it is beginning Phase II of the Airport Access Control Pilot Program in which it will test advanced technologies to enhance access control to secure areas of an airport. According to the press release, the TSA will pilot the technologies at Boston's Logan; New York's John F. Kennedy; Denver; Orlando; and Salt Lake City.
