The Wall Street Journal reports that the U.S. is stepping up its efforts to enforce existing restrictions on exports of sensitive dual-use technologies (with potential military applications) to Iran. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is now investigating approximately 80 instances of smuggling of such technologies and a dozen cases alleging illegal exports to Iran are before U.S. courts. 3. ITA Solicits Market Development Cooperator Program Projects
The International Trade Administration (ITA) has issued a notice announcing that it is soliciting U.S. export promotion projects to be conducted by eligible entities for periods up to three years. According to the ITA, Market Development Cooperator Program (MDCP) awards help to underwrite the start-up costs of new export ventures that export multipliers are often reluctant to undertake without Federal Government support. The ITA states that proposals must be received no later than 5 p.m. EST on April 25, 2005 and that a public meeting to discuss the competition will be held on March 18, 2005 in Washington, DC. 4. Shipping Coordinating Committee to Meet on March 29 and April 22
The State Department has issued notices announcing that the Shipping Coordinating Committee will be conducting open meetings on March 29, 2005 and April 22, 2005 in Washington, DC. The primary purpose of the March 29, 2005 meeting is to prepare for the 9th session of the Subcommittee on Bulk Liquids and Gasses to be held at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Headquarters in London from April 4, 2005 to April 8, 2005. The primary purpose of the April 22, 2005 meeting is to finalize preparations for the 80th Session of the Maritime Safety Committee, and associated bodies of the IMO, which is scheduled for May 11-20, 2005 in London.
