CBP Administrative Messages, Web Postings, Etc

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has issued an ABI administrative message announcing that its most recent Harmonized System (HS) update (No. 0501) contains:

1. HS Update Reflects Australia FTA, Etc.

Changes required by the verification of the 2005 Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS). (CBP notes that it will continue to verify the 2005 HTS for the remainder of the year).

Changes to the Tariff mandated by Proclamation 7857, the United States-Australia Free Trade Agreement, published in the Federal Register of December 20, 2004.

Changes to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) other government agency (OGA) flags.

The permit indicators associated with the beef export certificate, ATPDEA certificate, as well as the Canada and Mexico NAFTA TPL certificates.

CBP also states that updated records are currently available to all ABI participants and can be retrieved electronically via the procedures indicated in the Customs and Trade Automated Interface Requirements (CATAIR). CBP Commissioner remarks at Trade Symposium. The remarks of Commissioner Robert Bonner at the January 12-14, 2005 Trade Symposium held in Washington, D.C. are available at http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/newsroom/commissioner/speeches_statements/01132005_trade.xml.

Personal radiation detectors alert. CBP issued a press release stating that CBP officers, using personal radiation detection devices, discovered the presence of radioactive Cobalt 60 during a routine boarding inspection of a container ship at Los Angeles seaport on January 26. CBP laboratory personnel and the Department of Energy began testing and found the test determined that the source, a gauge used to test the ship's fire extinguishing system, posed no threat.
