Ports of Laem Chabang, Thailand and Tanjung Pelepas, Malaysia Become Operational in the Container Security Initiative
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has issued press releases announcing that CBP officers will be deployed at the ports of Laem Chabang, Thailand and Tanjung Pelepas, Malaysia as part of the Container Security Initiative (CSI).

The U.S. and Thailand signed a CSI declaration of principles in June 2003. (See ITT's Online Archives or 06/30/04 news, 03063015, for BP summary.)
The U.S. and Malaysia signed a CSI declaration of principles in January 2003. CSI became operational at the port of Klang, Malaysia on March 8, 2004. (See ITT's Online Archives or 01/23/03 and 03/09/04 news, 03012315 and 04030920, for BP summaries.)
CBP officers will work with host government personnel to target any cargo container that poses a potential risk for terrorism destined for the U.S. Officials of the Kingdom of Thailand (for port of Laem Chabang) or the Malaysian government (for the port of Tanjung Pelepas) will inspect containers identified as a potential terrorist risk.
Ports of Laem Chabang and Tanjung Pelepas 24th and 25th CSI Ports to Become Operational
According to CBP, the ports of Laem Chabang and Tanjung Pelepas are the 24th and 25th ports to become operational in CSI. The ports of Laem Chabang and Tanjung Pelepas join the already CSI operational ports of Rotterdam, Le Havre, Bremerhaven, Hamburg, Antwerp, Singapore, Yokohama, Durban, Hong Kong, Gteborg, Felixstowe, Genoa, La Spezia, Busan, Vancouver, Montreal, Halifax, Klang, Tokyo, Piraeus, Algeciras, Nagoya, and Kobe.
