USTR to Review China's Compliance with its WTO Commitments

The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) has issued a notice announcing that the interagency Trade Policy Staff Committee (TPSC) will convene a public hearing on September 14, 2005 and will seek public comments until noon on September 6, 2005 to assist the USTR in preparation of its annual report to Congress on China's compliance with the commitments that it made in connection with its accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO).

(China became a member of the WTO on December 11, 2001. According to the USTR, Section 421 of the U.S.-China Relations Act of 2000 (Public Law 106-286) requires the USTR to submit to Congress, by December 11 of each year, a report on China's compliance with commitments made in connection with its WTO accession, including both multilateral commitments and any bilateral commitments made to the U.S.)

USTR Invites Comments/Testimony on Import & Export Regulations, IPR, Etc.

The USTR is inviting written comments and/or oral testimony on China's compliance with its WTO commitments, including, but not limited to, commitments in the following areas: trading rights; import regulation (e.g., tariffs, etc.); export regulation; internal policies affecting trade (e.g., subsidies, etc.); intellectual property rights (IPR, including intellectual property enforcement); services; rule of law issues (e.g., transparency, etc.) and status of legal reform; and other WTO commitments.
