OTEXA's February 2004 Textile and Apparel Trade Balance Report

The Commerce Department's Office of Textiles and Apparel (OTEXA) has issued its February 2004 Textile and Apparel Trade Balance Report (containing data through February 28, 2004). The Trade Balance Report shows imports, exports, and the resulting U.S. trade balance for yarn, fabric, made-ups, and apparel, both individually and collectively (total). The Trade Balance report displays this information for the world, as well as for major U.S. trading partners.

(OTEXA notes that this report does not include (a) raw cotton, unspun wool, or man-made fiber products that have not been processed into yarns with twist or (b) apparel of leather, fur, or plastic.)

According to this report, the total general U.S. imports (Customs value), exports (F.A.S. value), and trade balance (value) for year-to-date February 2004 versus year-to-date February 2003 changed by the following percentages:

World - 0.75%- 1.57%decreased by0.56%
Canada 3.79% 2.37%increased by11.06%
Mexico- 5.70%- 6.12%decreased by5.13%
China 7.86% 46.50%increased by7.38%
South Korea 2.12% 13.82%increased by1.57%
Hong Kong- 4.35% 18.34%decreased by5.85%
Taiwan- 6.17% 6.19%decreased by6.50%
Japan 6.88% 7.49%increased by5.23%
EU15 5.08%- 0.64%increased by6.97%
ASEAN- 8.78% 3.56%decreased by8.98%
CBI (w/Haiti)- 4.74%- 6.35%decreased by3.05%
LDDC (w/o Haiti)- 2.25% 1.01%decreased by2.26%

The Commerce Department states that the product coverage in this reportis "more extensive" than that in the Major Shippers Report because it includes certain products that have not been assigned a category number (and are not subject to quota or visa).
