CBP Web Site Lists IPR Seizure Statistics for FY 1999 - 2003

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) lists on its Web site its top intellectual property rights (IPR) seizures by top trading partner and commodity for fiscal year (FY) 1999 through FY 2003.

Value of FY 2003 IPR Seizures Decreases, But Number of Seizures Increases

CBP states that the domestic value of FY 2003 IPR seizures represented the third highest during the five-year period from FY 1999 - FY 2003. In FY 2003, the overall domestic value of CBP's IPR seizures came to $94,019, 227 (compared with FY 2002's total of $98,990,341).

CBP adds that although the value of IPR seizures declined by 5% from FY 2002, the number of seizures increased by 12%, with IPR seizures having more than doubled from FY 2000's low of 3,244.

Cigarettes Are Top IPR Commodity Value, Goods from China Are 66% of Seizures

CBP's statistics for top IPR commodities seized show that with respect to commodities, cigarettes accounted for 44% of the total value of IPR commodities seized in FY 2003. Other top commodities include (partial list): wearing apparel (15%), handbags/wallets/backpacks (12%), media (e.g. motion pictures on tape, laser disc, and DVD; certain interactive and computer software, etc.) (8%), consumer electronics (4%), and watches/parts (4%).

With respect to top trading partners, in FY 2003 goods from China accounted for 66% of the domestic value of IPR seizures. Other trading partners that accounted for top IPR seizures include (partial list): Hong Kong (9%), Korea (3%), Pakistan (2%), Mexico (2%), and Malaysia (1%).

In addition to the above-described statistics, CBP's FY 2003 data includes comparisons between FY 2002 and FY 2003, as well as country-specific statistics for certain trading partners.
