2. Deborah Spero to Become Acting Deputy CBP Commissioner on April 2
According to The Journal of Commerce, Deborah Spero will become Acting Deputy Commissioner at U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on April 2, 2004, when current Deputy Commissioner Douglas Browning retires. The article notes that Spero has been Assistant Commissioner of Strategic Trade since 2000, and for the last year, has been head of CBP's Transition Office. (JoC dated 03/25/04, www.joc.com.)
3. APHIS Reopens Comment Period for Environmental Impact Statement on Introduction of Genetically Engineered Organisms
The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is announcing that it has reopened until April 13, 2004 the comment period for a notice of intent to prepare an environmental impact statement in connection with potential changes to APHIS regulations regarding the importation, interstate movement, and environmental release of certain genetically engineered organisms. 4. BIS Orders Denying Export Privileges of Two Persons
The Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) has renewed for 180 days an order temporarily denying the export privileges of Yaudat Mustafa Talyi (aka Joseph Talyi); however the order has not been renewed for two related entities as both have been dissolved as corporate entities. In addition, the order has not been renewed for Uni-Arab Engineering and Oil Field Services (Uni-Arab) and two related persons. Instead, BIS has issued an order, effective immediately, temporarily denying for 180 days the export privileges of Uni-Arab and the two related persons.
