According to CBP, all exam applications and exam fees must be received and accepted by CBP at the service port where the applicant intends to take the examination on or before the close of business (COB) Friday, March 5, 2004 to be considered.

CBP also states that any applicant who files an application and subsequently wishes to withdraw from the exam must submit a written notice of withdrawal to the CBP service port where the application was originally tendered, by COB Wednesday, March 31, 2004.

CBP states that the April exam will last for four hours, consist of 80 multiple-choice questions, and a computed score of 75% is required to pass.

Any Written Reference Materials (Previous Exams, Etc.) May be Brought to Exam

In its notice announcing the April 2004 exam, CBP states that it wrote the exam using the following references and that applicants should bring these references to the exam:

Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (2004) (HTS, USITC Publication 3653)(No Supplements); and

Title 19, Code of Federal Regulations (19 CFR)(2003 (revised as of April 1, 2003)).

CBP further states in its notice that the use of any editions or references other than those recommended above is at the applicant's own risk.

CBP sources have confirmed that in addition to the HTS and 19 CFR, applicants are allowed to bring any other written reference materials to the exam, including previous Customs Broker exams and answer keys, training manuals, etc.

(Sources note that CBP began allowing examinees to bring additional written reference material to the April and October 2003 Customs Broker exams, but that the April 2004 exam is the first time that copies of previous Customs Broker exams and answer keys will be permitted.)

Electronic Material Continues to be Precluded

Although CBP is allowing the use of additional written reference materials, CBP sources emphasize that electronic material (i.e., laptops, PDAs, etc.) are precluded.
