According to a USDA veterinarian, the strain found in Texas (H5N2) is a more serious type than that found in flocks in certain Eastern states; however, these strains that have been found in the U.S. are different from the (HPAI) (H5N1) affecting parts of Asia.

Avian influenza has several strains that mostly appear in winter months. The virus is transmitted by migratory birds and by manure, equipment, vehicles, egg containers and human clothing and shoes that have had contact with the disease.
