OTEXA's December 2003 Textile and Apparel Trade Balance Report

The Commerce Department's Office of Textiles and Apparel (OTEXA) has issued its December 2003 Textile and Apparel Trade Balance Report (containing data through December 31, 2003). The Trade Balance Report shows imports and exports and calculates the trade balance for U.S. textile and apparel trade with the world and with major U.S. trading partners.

(OTEXA notes that this report does not include (a) raw cotton, unspun wool, or man-made fiber products that have not been processed into yarns with twist or (b) apparel of leather, fur, or plastic.)

According to this report, general U.S. textile and apparel imports (Customs value), exports (F.A.S. value), and trade balance (value) for year-to-date December 2003 versus year-to-date December 2002 changed by the following percentages:

World 8.27%- 1.91%deficit increased by10.94%
Canada- 0.71%- 0.91%deficit increased by0.89%
Mexico- 5.63%- 5.52%deficit decreased by5.76%
China 29.96% 31.32%deficit increased by29.93%
South Korea- 10.14% 10.67%deficit decreased by10.99%
Hong Kong- 4.99%- 3.71%deficit decreased by5.09%
Taiwan- 0.15% 14.10%deficit decreased by0.50%
Japan 17.21%- 3.46%deficit increased by130.49%
EU15 6.06%- 2.36%deficit increased by8.83%
ASEAN 16.32% 16.86%deficit increased by16.31%
CBI (w/Haiti) 1.55%- 2.44%deficit increased by5.19%
LDDC (w/o Haiti) 9.25% 16.24%deficit increased by9.22%

The Commerce Department states that the product coverage in this reportis "more extensive" than that in the Major Shippers Report because it includes certain products that have not been assigned a category number (and are not subject to quota or visa).
