The Port of Los Angeles has issued a Public Bulletin advising Airport stakeholders that Carlos Martel has returned to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) as Area Port Director, effective July 11, 2011, after having acted as the Director of Field Operations for the Los Angeles Field Office. Martel is responsible for Operations at Los Angeles International Airport, Ontario, San Bernardino, Palm Springs, John Wayne, and Las Vegas McCarran International Airport.

The Department of Homeland Security's Office of Inspector General has issued a follow-up letter on the recent "Independent Auditors' Report" issued by KPMG LLP on U.S. Customs and Border Protection's fiscal year 2010 internal controls for the financial reporting of its Information Technology activity. The letter details the "significant deficiency" that was found for CBP's IT and financial system controls in the following areas: access control, security management, segregation of duties, and financial system functionality, and lists recommendations for improvement.
The Port of Long Beach reports that it continued to post modest gains in container cargo volume for the year with a 6.6 percent overall volume increase in June compared to a year ago. Imports were up 3.5% while exports rose by 9% compared to June 2010. Empty container moves were up 10.3%. Calendar year to date, overall container moves at the Port are up 6.2 percent. Imports are up 6% and exports are up 4%.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection states that Chicago CBP Office of Field Operations officers working at the International mail facility near O’Hare Airport recently seized a shipment of embroidered jackets from Laos, that were completely saturated with liquid opium. The seizure was the result of a canine inspection. The jackets, which were manifested as “Mong Traditional Skirt handicraft,” had been x-rayed, but no hidden lining or secret compartments were found. A narcotics test revealed the presence of opium.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection has announced that its agriculture specialists intercepted a Phaenomerus weevil on July 8, 2011 while inspecting containers of stainless steel coils at the Baltimore seaport. A USDA pest identifier also confirmed that several Khapra beetle insect pest interceptions occurred -- one live larva, one dead adult and three cast skins -- in rice shipped from Saudi Arabia via international mail on July 6. On a typical day, CBP agriculture specialists seize 4,291 prohibited meat, plant materials or animal products, including 454 insect pests.
