On January 5, 2011, 1,655 companies and associations sent a letter to members of the 112th Congress urging them to pursue trade and investment policies and agreements that will help U.S. companies and workers to remain competitive. As a first step, the companies and associations urge Congress to consider and approve pending trade initiatives, such as the free trade agreements with Korea, Colombia and Panama.
On January 5, 2011, Representative Camp (R) was formally elected by the House of Representatives to serve as the House Ways and Means Committee Chairman for the 112th Congress. According to Camp’s press release, the House Ways and Means Committee’s top priority will be economic growth and job creation, while reducing federal spending.

On December 18, 2010, the President signed into law H.R. 2480, the Truth in Fur Labeling Act of 2010, which will require most apparel with fur to be labeled (Public Law 111-313).
On December 22, 2010, the President signed into law H.R. 3082, the Continuing Appropriations and Surface Transportation Extensions Act, 2011 (Public Law 111-322).

On January 4, 2011, the President signed into law the “FDA Food Safety Modernization Act,” as Public Law 111-353 in order to modernize the food safety system to better prevent food-borne illness and respond to outbreaks. On January 2, 2011, the President signed into law H.R. 847, the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010. As enacted, H.R. 847 contains a new excise tax on foreign procurement which was opposed by several trade groups.
On December 16, 2010, the Senate passed H.R. 2142, the Government Efficiency, Effectiveness, and Performance Improvement Act of 2010. The House passed H.R. 2142 on December 21, 2010, clearing the measure for the President.
