On March 29-30, 2011, the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee’s Highways and Transit Subcommittee held a hearing on a pending surface transportation reauthorization. At the hearing, the Subcommittee sought suggestions from approximately 40 transportation community witnesses on how to streamline and consolidate programs, cut red tape to speed up the infrastructure project approval process, and create jobs through wise investment of limited resources.

The House Ways and Means Committee’s Trade Subcommittee will hold the third in its series of hearings on the pending free trade agreements with Colombia, Panama, and South Korea. The focus of the third hearing, scheduled for April 7, 2011, is the pending FTA with Korea (KORUS FTA).
On March 31, 2011, the Senate Judiciary Committee held a mark up of S. 216, a bill to increase criminal penalties for certain knowing and international violations relating to food that is misbranded or adulterated. On March 31, 2011, the President signed into law the Airport and Airway Extension Act of 2011 (H.R. 1079), which extends through May 31, 2011, authorities to collect taxes that fund the Airport and Airway Trust Fund (including the tax on domestic air cargo (freight) transportation), make expenditures from the Airport and Airway Trust Fund, and make grants to airports under the Airport Improvement Program.
