The Consumer Product Safety Commission will consider a petition to adopt a mandatory safety standard on duster aerosol products, it said in a notice released June 28. Submitted in April by the Families United Against Inhalant Abuse, the petition requests CPSC begin a rulemaking on aerosol products used for cleaning electronics and other items that contain the chemical 1,1- Difluorethane or any derivative. It requests a performance standard that includes requirements to add a bitterant that appears in the spray at a designated level, as well as a “much stronger” warning on the can. Comments on the petition are due Aug. 30.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is issuing a final rule setting new mandatory children’s product safety standards for infant sleep products. Meant as a catch-all for infant sleep products not covered by other CPSC children’s product safety standards, the standard also bans infant sleep products inclined at more than 10 degrees. Compliance with the final rule, including testing and certification requirements, is required by June 23, 2022.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission is amending its flammability standard for mattresses and mattress pads to update testing requirements, it said in a final rule released June 22. “The ignition source cigarette specified in the standard for use in the mattress standard’s performance tests, Standard Reference Material cigarette SRM 1196, is no longer available for purchase,” CPSC said. “This final rule amends the mattress standard to require a revised Standard Reference Material cigarette, SRM 1196a, which was developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, as the ignition source for testing to the mattress standard.” The final rule takes effect July 23.
