FDA has issued its Enforcement Report for April 27, listing the status of recalls and field corrections for food, cosmetics, tobacco products, drugs, biologics and devices. The report covers both domestic and foreign firms.
FDA is proposing to establish an action level for lead in apple juice at 10 parts per billion “on a single-strength (ready-to-drink) basis” and an action level for lead of 20 ppb for other single-strength juice types, including blends containing apple juice, it said in a draft guidance document released April 27. The new action levels would replace the current level of 50 ppb described in FDA’s guidance on juice hazard analysis and critical control point (HACCP) hazards and controls. “Though not binding, these action levels are intended to encourage manufacturers to maintain lead levels in juices below the action levels, thus reducing risks associated with dietary lead exposures,” FDA said. “When this draft guidance is finalized, we intend to update the Juice HACCP Guidance … to reflect the new action levels.” Comments are due June 28, the FDA said.
