CBP officers at the Port of Savannah recently seized nearly $2 million in counterfeit Hermès Birkin handbags, said the agency in a Nov. 5 press release (here). The shipment of 198 handbags would have had an estimated manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $1,861,200, said CBP, but was manifested as “polyurethane handbags,” said CBP. The seizure is the Port of Savannah’s third multi-million dollar seizure of counterfeit goods in 2014, said the agency.

CBP issued its weekly tariff rate quota and tariff preference level commodity report as of Nov. 3. This report (here) includes TRQs on various products such as beef, sugar, dairy products, peanuts, cotton, cocoa products, and tobacco; and certain BFTA, DR-CAFTA, Israel FTA, JFTA, MFTA, OFTA, SFTA, UAFTA (AFTA) and UCFTA (Chile FTA) non-textile TRQs, etc. Each report also includes the AGOA, ATPDEA, BFTA, DR-CAFTA, CBTPA, Haitian HOPE, MFTA, NAFTA, OFTA, SFTA, and UCFTA TPLs and TRQs for qualifying textile articles and/or other articles; the TRQs on worsted wool fabrics, etc.

CBP reminded importers that the period for Food and Drug Administration food facility registration renewal ends Dec. 31. Beginning Jan. 1, if a foreign food facility is required to register with the Food and Drug Administration, but fails to do so, food from that facility that is being imported or offered for import into the U.S. is subject to import refusal. Food facility registrations that are not renewed by Jan. 1 will be subject to invalidation of registration and could result in food shipments manufactured by those facilities without valid registrations to be held at the port or refused upon arrival in the U.S., said CBP in a CSMS message (here).
