The State Department Directorate of Defense Trade Controls all-day In-House Seminar on export licensing basics previously scheduled for Dec. 6 has been canceled. The next seminar will be March 14, it said.
It remains somewhat unclear how long it will take for the U.S. to open up to imports from Burma, a senior State Department official said in a briefing Sept. 26 in New York City. The official said that will require a waiver to be done by the Administration, and State "will be consulting with Congress quite closely. "I don't know exactly how long" the process will take, the official said: "I always underestimate how long it's going to take, but we want to get it started through consultations and work on all the legalities we need to touch before it's done."

The State Department Advisory Committee on Private International Law's Study Group on Choice of Law in International Commercial Contracts will meet at 10 a.m. Oct. 19 in Room 240, South Building, State Department, Annex 4, the State Department said. A working group of experts from various countries created draft principles that will be considered at a Special Commission of the Hague Conference Nov. 12-16. In remarks at the U.S. Institute of Peace, Burmese pro-democracy leader and parliamentarian Aung San Suu Kyi voiced her support for lifting the U.S. ban on imports from Burma. “I do support the easing of sanctions, because I think that our people must start taking responsibility for their own destiny.” While grateful for the sanctions’ political effect, she said there are many other ways in which the U.S. can encourage development of democracy in Burma.
