The U.S. State Department plans a conference call on Taking Advantage of the New Free Trade Agreement With Panama at 1 p.m. Dec. 11. Although an earlier version of the announcement said the FTA is set to take effect "by November 1," it was changed Oct. 22 to say the FTA will "take effect soon." "All of us support --- and from the President on down --- increased two-way trade [with China] based on fair rules of the road and a legal playing field between the U.S. and China," said State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland during a press briefing Oct. 18. She was responding to a series of reporter questions about whether recent U.S. actions, including limits on telecom firms Huawei and ZTE and on Chinese investments in U.S. wind farms mean more protectionism.
The State Department's Shipping Coordinating Committee scheduled an open meeting at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 7 to prepare for the April meeting of the International Maritime Organization's Facilitation Committee. The coordinating committee is to meet in Room 5-0624 of the U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters Building, 2100 2nd Street SW, Washington, D.C. Agenda items include: Decisions of other IMO bodies; Consideration and adoption of proposed amendments to the Convention; General review of the Convention; Electronic means for the clearance of ships, cargo and passengers; Electronic access to, or electronic versions of, certificates and documents required to be carried on ships, including ISCG work; Analysis and collection of relevant practices, standards and activities including World Customs Organization and International Organization for Standardization standards; and Facilitation of shipments of dangerous cargoes.
